About UsWe teach social studies, language arts and journalism at Alta Vista High School in Kansas City, Missouri. Through Fund for Teachers, we have been awarded a grant to continue the work that our colleagues started two years ago. We plan to interview people in France about the displacement of Muslims in that country, as well as the building (or maintaining) of their identity and community. We will travel to Marseille and Paris, and we will document our trip here and social media along the way. At the end of our trip, we will produce a model text for our students, which you will also find on this site.

Mary Claire Gustafson teaches language arts 1 and 2 at Alta Vista High School. She is thrilled to dive into the project to produce more authentic and relevant writing models for her students. She is most excited to experience the French culture from the perspective of immigrants to better understand how communities develop their identities. Mary Claire thanks Fund for Teachers for believing in their project!
Michael Meaney teaches American history and personal finance at Alta Vista High School. Next year, he will also teach world history. He is excited to experience French culture for the first time and finally use the French he started learning at age 5. He will focus on developing a true inquiry-based learning model to bring back to his students as an exemplar for their immigration unit. He would like to thank Fund For Teachers for this wonderful opportunity and his amazing wife, friends, and family for their love and support.
